Kia Ora,

The PGSA Victorias Awards 2018 was successfully held on Friday, 30 November 2018. These awards celebrate excellence within Victoria University’s postgraduate community and recognise the support of postgraduate students, academic and professional staff who work with passion and dedication. These awards aim to acknowledge and honour the staff for their endeavours, the tutors for their unceasing support, and the research students for expanding the limits of knowledge and pursuing pioneering research projects.

This year the awards celebration was a special one as it marked the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Postgraduate Students’ Association. As a gesture of appreciation, the PGSA honoured the founding members of the organisation who helped pave the way for the association through their sheer determination and commitment to postgraduate causes and concerns.

Provost Professor Wendy Larner gave the opening remarks in which she highlighted the important role these awards play in making the postgraduate community feel appreciated and valued. Other presenters included the Vice Provost (Research) Professor Margaret Hyland and the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Research Professor Peter Whiteford who gave away the Research Excellence Awards (REA) and the VUW Supervisor Awards respectively. The Co-President of the Tertiary Education Union and professional staff member Katy Miller, co-presented the Professional Staff Award. This year all the awards (except for the REA) were co-presented by staff and PGSA student representatives. The idea behind co-presenting was to highlight the collegiality among staff and students in the University.

There was a great turnout for the event, which took place in Victoria University’s Hunter Lounge on the Kelburn Campus. It was heartening to see everyone showing up to support the postgraduate community. The following awards were distributed during the evening on 30 November: Postgraduate Research Excellence Awards, Landers Postgraduate Award, Supervisors Awards and Professional Staff Award.

The Victorias Awards provide a platform to acknowledge equality, inclusion and diversity within the University’s postgraduate community. It is because of the kindness and assistance of the sponsors over the years that the event has been able to flourish and become a major occasion among the postgraduate community. Therefore, the PGSA extends their gratitude and appreciation to the Office of the Vice Provost (Research), the Victoria University of Wellington Student’s Association and the Tertiary Education Union for their continuous support and generosity.

These Awards celebrate creativity, collaboration and excellence, but most importantly, these awards recognise the whanau on campus that forms an integral part of the postgraduate journey. So, thank you to everyone who attended, contributed and participated. Your support helped make the event such a great success!

Nga Mihi,

Priyanka Roy, President - PGSA
